Why Choose a Traditional Starter?

The beauty of a traditional sourdough starter lies in its simplicity and versatility. It provides a depth of flavor that commercial yeast simply can’t replicate, while also offering health benefits like improved digestion and gut-friendly probiotics. Plus, maintaining a starter is easier than you think—it just takes a little time and patience!

How to Make Your Own Traditional Sourdough Starter

Ingredients:

For the starter:

  • 50g warm water
  • 50g flour

For feeding:

  • 50g starter
  • 50g warm water
  • 50g flour

Instructions:

  1. In a clean mason jar (or any glass jar), combine the flour and warm water.
  2. Stir well and scrape down the sides.
  3. Cover loosely with a breathable lid, such as a towel or coffee filter.
  4. Let it sit at room temperature for 4 days, stirring daily to help build strength.
  5. On day 5, feed the starter with the feeding ingredients. Let it sit for 6-12 hours until bubbly and active.
  6. Once active, remove 1 cup of the starter for baking and store the rest in the fridge.

Caring for Your Starter

Once established, your sourdough starter becomes a living part of your kitchen. Feed it regularly (about once a week), and it will reward you with beautifully risen loaves, fluffy pancakes, and so much more. Simply mix in the feeding ingredients, let it sit at room temperature until bubbly, and store it back in the fridge.
